Local Layer

2024, Arles

Material research
For Atelier Luma

Local Layer explores the creation of 3D-printed objects using bio-sourced materials derived from local agricultural by-products, such as olive waste combined with algae binder and paper pulp. The process begins with an exploration of a specific bioregion to identify and understand the natural resources available. These materials are then transformed into printable pastes, enabling the production of complex forms through a modified ceramic 3D printer and without the use of plastics or the need for high-temperature firing. The process continues with the design of objects that respond to the material’s inherent properties, while also expressing a deep connection between place, matter, form, and technological innovation. Local Layer envisions a decentralized, low-impact model of production, one that redefines how we engage with materials, environment, and design.
